TRAINING
The Marine Mammal Observation Network (MMON) has developed a two-component training program on observing marine mammals and operating passive acoustic monitoring systems at marine worksites. It is the only program of its kind in Canada.
Since 2012, MMON has offered a training course for Marine Mammal Observers (MMO) and Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) Operators, developed in collaboration with the École des pêches et de l’Aquaculture du Québec.
This program is the only one of its kind in Canada. It lasts six consecutive days, combining theory and practical training exercises. Students who complete the course with scores above 70% in both areas will receive two separate certificates (i.e., MMO and PAM).
MMON is the first organization in Canada to provide engineering consulting firms with a directory of MMO-certified candidates, most of them with experience and, most importantly, supervised by MMON’s team of specialists. This service facilitates start-up on worksites once the necessary government authorizations are obtained.

JOBS / INTERNSHIPS
The Marine Mammal Observation Network (MMON) offers job opportunities and internships for technicians and interpretive guides during the summer season.
Raising awareness about the rich diversity of the marine world is an important element of conservation efforts for marine mammals and their habitats. That is why MMON employs interpretive guides specializing in the marine environment during the summer season.
Whether at an interpretation centre, directly aboard a boat, or at an event, interpretation plays a vital role in promoting public interest in marine species and fostering positive changes in behaviour toward the marine environment. “We will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand.” That is the fundamental axiom of the interpretive guide’s profession!
MMON also offers internships followed by a period of paid employment to graduates of the province’s bioecology and wildlife management degree programs as well as to foreign students.
